August 22: In 1935, a Stratford athlete named Doyle threw the javelin 175'8.25". Impressive. It was also the state record for 13 years and one of the top SHS throws to this day.
August 1: It was originally thought that Joe Tanucci gained 5545 points in the decathlon. However, his 1500m was incorrectly scored worse than it actually was. Northeast Sports Timing Services and the CIAC corrected this, and Tanucci now is listed with 5804 points. He still finished 2nd, but now only was 61 points off of the team record, held by Kevin Krankall. The new score can be found here.
July 14: The Connecticut Post Spring Sports All-Stars list has been published, and SHS is richly represented. Joe Tanucci was honored, one of only 2 SWC representatives. The Coach of the Year for Boys' Outdoor Track was: you guessed it, Stratford High's own Mr. Mike Sirowich. This is as great an honor as any awarded to our team this year, and appropriate, as Sirowich's teams dominated the SWC and had no real peer within the conference, a remarkable turnaround for a program that was pushed around last year.
June 15-16: The Class of 2001 completed one of the greatest years in SHS track history as Joe Tanucci competed in javelin at the adidas National Championships. He finished 14th in the country in javelin, throwing 173'6". While not a school record, it was the 8th time this season he threw over 170'.
June 13: The Stratford High track season is STILL not over, even after the New England, decathlon, and steeplechase championships held this past week. At New Englands, Joe Tanucci threw 165'11" to place 16th in the region. He then came back three days later to place 2nd in the state in the 10-event decathlon, the most brutal competition in track and field. He gained All-State by scoring 5545 points. Joe Lima was also slated to participate but withdrew to a stress fracture in his foot. James daSilva competed in the 3000m steeplechase and placed 12th with a time of 10:40.32. The last meet for SHS track and the Class of 2001 is this weekend at the adidas National Championships in North Carolina.
June 5: And then there was one...SHS competed at the State Open, scoring 4 points on the strength of Joe Tanucci's 5th place finish in the javelin. Joe Lima placed 18th in the state in the 300m hurdles, and James daSilva was 21st in the 3200m, breaking the school record of 10:04.6 with his time of 10:04.45. Tanucci is now headed to New Englands, and then Nationals, with decathlon in between. daSilva will be competing in steeplechase on June 13. State Open results can be found here.
