August 1: The Connecticut Post published their Spring Sports All-Stars, and sprinter Kevin Chapin was one of five SWC selections to the Boys Outdoor Track All-Stars. Chapin is the only freshman to make this list in the last two years and follows the previous selections of Joe Lima (Indoor '02) and Joe Tanucci (Outdoor '01).

July 7: At the 2002 USATF East Regional Track & Field Championships on July 7, class of 2001 alum Joe Tanucci finished 3rd overall (1st Connecticut) in the javelin, 4th in high jump (1st CT), and 16th in the 100m (4th CT), while fellow alum James daSilva won the 5000m run.

June 12: Wednesday, Cara Loux finished 9th in the heptathlon with a strong 2nd day, including a 2:35 in the 800m. Kevin Chapin was 10th in the decathlon, with strong javelin (135'10") and 1500m (4:48.63) results. Matt Fogarty just miss All-State in the hammer, throwing 113'1", while Tim Jacques threw 98'1" to finish in the top half of the draw. In girls hammer, Catherine Fergurson threw 65'7" with little practice to finish 15th.

June 11: After one day of decathlon, Kevin Chapin is in 5th place, only 257 points behind defending champion Adam Polite.  Chapin had a personal best in the long jump (19'10.75") and the 2nd best overall 400m run (50.49) for 3105 pts. Cara Loux is in 10th place in heptathlon after the first day with 2027 pts, having jumped 4'8.25" in high jump.
Tommorrow, Chapin and Loux will finish their competition, while Mike Conner, Tim Jacques, Matt Fogarty, and Eugene Chest in hammer throw, and Cara Loux in heptathlon.

June 8: All-State Kevin Chapin competed at the New England Championships Saturday, finishing 12th out of 22 competitors with a time of 51.01.
Next week, Chapin will compete in decathlon, Tim Jacques, Matt Fogarty, and Eugene Chest in hammer throw, and Cara Loux in heptathlon.

June 4: Kevin Chapin made All-State Tuesday with a 3rd place in the 400m at State Open. He also was 7th in the 200m, missing All-State there by .02 seconds. Both his times (50.16, 22.98) are personal bests and close to school records. He also qualified for New Englands in the 400m. Stratford finished 31st as a team due to his 8 points. Stratford has had an All-State boys outdoor track athlete for 8 consecutive years.

May 31: Kevin Chapin and Catherine Fergurson prepare for the State Open on Tuesday, while Chapin and Dave Harvey (if he can return from injury) also get ready for decathlon, while Cara Loux practices for heptatlon and Tim Jacques, Matt Fogarty and Eugene Chest work out with the hammer.

May 30: This week the boys outdoor track team competed at Class M states. Although Dave Harvey suffered an injury in warmups and did not compete, Kevin Chapin earned 14 points for the team with a 3rd (400m), 4th (200m) and 6th (100m). His 400m time of 50.19 is only .22 seconds off the school record.

May 28: On Tuesday the girls outdoor track team competed at Class MM championships. Cara Loux was 7th in the 110 hurdles, while Sarah Mitchell (400m) and Catherine Fergurson (shot) had 8ths. Fergurson qualified for the State Open. The boys team will go to Class M states on Thursday.

May 21: On Tuesday, the boys outdoor team earned 20 points to finish 11th at the SWC championships with only three competitors. Kevin Chapin earned 2nd in the 400m, 3rd in the 100m and 5th in the 200m, Dave Harvey was 4th in the 300h and Tim Jacques competed in the javelin. Matt Fogarty withdrew from the javelin due to injury. Bethel won the championship with 101 pts, followed by indoor champ New Milford, then Pomperaug. Stratford remains the only team since 1999 to sweep indoor and outdoor, as well as the only old CCIAC team to ever capture SWCs.

May 20: Tonight the girls track team placed 4th at the SWC championships at Bunnell. Sarah Mitchell won the 400 and was a runner-up in the 800, and Catherine Fergurson was 2nd in the shot put. Cara Loux earned three medals in the 110h, 300h and high jump.

May 19: The SWC boys championship will be on Tuesday at Bethel, a day after the girls meet at Bunnell. For the boys, Kevin Chapin (100,200,400, long jump) and Dave Harvey (100, 300h, long jump, triple jump), Tim Jacques (javelin), and Matt Fogarty (javelin) will be competing. Stratford is the defending champions, although Pomperaug (14-0 SWC) and New Milford (12-1-1) are this year's favorites.

May 14: The final regular season meet of the year for the SHS boys track team took place Tuesday at the Bunnell track. Stratford defeated Masuk 78.5-71.5 while losing to New Fairfield 98-61. Kevin Chapin won three events and anchored the 2nd place 4x400 team.
SHS is now 5-10, with a 4-7 SWC record.

May 7: This week the boys track team took on undefeated New Milford, as well as Barlow and Foran, taking the meet with Foran. Kevin Chapin had state qualfying marks in 4 events, winning the 400. Dave Harvery won the 300m hurdles, and Matt Fogarty qualfied for the javelin. The team is now 4-9, with a 2-1 division record.

May 1: Yesterday the boys track team competed at Brookfield against Law and Weston in a rain-shortened meet. Before the stoppage, senior Tim Jacques qualified for Class M states in the javelin.

April 23: The boys outdoor track team competed in an SWC meet against Pomperaug, Bethel and Notre Dame on Tuesday. Although losing 2 out of 3, the win over Notre Dame leaves SHS undefeated in the division since May 15, 2000. Results of this meet and others will be up as soon as I recieve results.

April 12: The boys track team lost to a strong Fairfield Prep team. Out of the meet, however, came several strong performances, including state qualifying marks in the 100,200, and 400 by Kevin Chapin, and in the 300 hurdles by Dave Harvey.

April 9: The boys outdoor track team opened up their conference schedule at Bunnell on Tuesday, dropping decisions to Newtown and Bunnell, but defeating Immaculate. Joe Lima led the way with wins in four events. The losses snapped Stratford's 14-meet SWC winning streak, and leaves them at 1-3 overall, but 1-0 in division.

April 4: The boys track team began the season this week, with a loss at Morgan. The team was without the injured Dave Harvey. Tim Jacques set a personal best in the javelin, and Kevin Atterberry won the 3200 and triple jump. The loss snapped SHS's 15-meet winning streak dating back to last year.

March 20: At the winter sports awards this week, Rachel Crosby and Dave Harvey were awarded the Red Devil Award, and senior captains Tim Jacques and Stephanie Halverson won the Most Improved Award.

March 1: Joe Lima competed in the New England championships on Friday night, and tied for 9th in the high jump, with a jump of 6'2". He had been seeded 20th, but nearly came away with a medal. The SHS indoor season is now officially complete. New England results (Courtesy of Dyestat): Boys

February 23: The SHS track teams competed in the State Open tonight. Catherine Fergurson shattered her own shot put record, throwing 34'6.75" to finish 14th. Joe Lima earned All-State in the high jump, finishing 5th with a leap of 6'1". It is the 8th consecutive year a Stratford track athlete has earned All-State. February 16: The Stratford High track teams had extremely successful evenings at the Class S Championships.  Both teams came in 12th, with Catherine Fergurson, Joe Lima, Sarah Mitchell, Jeannine Rudd qualifying for State Open. Lima, Mitchell, and Fergurson also set school records. The teams combined for the most State Open qualifiers SHS has ever had indoors.

February 15: The Stratford High track teams compete in the Class S State championships this evening.. Among the qualifiers, Sarah Mitchell, Joe Lima, and the boys and girls sprint medley relay teams

February 2:  At the SWC championships Saturday, the boys placed 3rd and the girls 6th. At the meet, Sarah Mitchell gained a 2nd in the 600 and Zaria Williams got two 3rd places (50m dash and long jump) for the girls.
For the boys, Joe Lima won three events (50m hurdles, high jump, long jump) and broke two SWC records held by Kevin Krankall (Class of 1996). Kevin Oakes' 2nd place in the long jump was the 2nd straight year SHS swept the top 2 in that event. Tim Jacques also garnered a 3rd in shot put and a 6th on the 4x240 relay. The 4x800 relay team set a new team record of 9:40 to gain 5th place.

February 1: After the last developmental meet on January 26, the Stratford High indoor track teams look to record strong finishes in the SWC Championships. The Connecticut Post reviewed their chances as well as hearing what Head Coach Mike Sirowich had to say.

January 19: The indoor track team competed at the Yale Invitational, and the boys 4x800 team shattered the school record. The 4x200 team qualified for states by running a time of 1:44.50. Joe Lima and Kevin Oakes qualified for states for the 300m, Oakes exactly making the 41.00 cutoff. 
For the girls, Sarah Mitchell qualified for States in the 300m. They also turned in solid 4x800 and 4x200 races, missing states in the 4x200 by only 3 seconds.

January 12: The indoor track team competed Saturday at the SWC Developmental meet at Staples High School in Westport. There were many outstanding marks, and several new qualifiers. Joe Lima had a near-record high jump of 6'3", and Colin Sheldon and Sarah Mitchell established records in the first-ever 600m run at SHS.

December 5: The indoor track team has only run one meet so far, as the expected venues (Yale and CCSU) have not been available. In that meet, there were many qualifiers for both SWCs and states. State qualifiers: Dave Harvey, Joe Lima, Krystina Lucia, Tarika Logan, Sarah Mitchell, Kevin Oakes. SWC qualifiers: Kevin Atterbury, Eugene Chest, Nick Ferraro, Dave Harvey, Tim Jacques, and Kevin Oakes.
Lima also set a school record in the 400m (55.7).

December 1: Indoor track has begun, as the boys team looks to defend its SWC title. It will be a tough task following the loss of 12 seniors, but Joe Lima, Fred Wills, Tim Jacques, and others return. For the girls, Sara Mitchell looks to follow-up on her SWC record 300m finish of a year ago, and almost the entire team returns to improve on last year's 8th place finish. The teams go into action this Saturday at Yale University.

October 19: The Stratford High cross country teams competed in the SWC championships Friday, with the boys coming in 12th place while the girls were only able to run 4 runners. There were solid performances. First year runner Matt Melhouse came in 34th, with senior leader Fred Wills running 38th (18:47), improving almost 50 spots from the year before. For the girls, juniors Alison Janowski and Sara Levanthal placed 39th and 43rd, setting themselves up for a Top 25 run next year. The team prepares for states on Saturday, but have a large amount of runners coming back for next year.

October 16: The Stratford High cross country teams completed the regular season on the 15th at Pomperaug,  with the boys gaining one win  (over Masuk) while the girls lost to some of the best teams in the league. For the boys, Fred Wills came in 12th (19:25), Pat Noonan was 17th (20:04) and Matt Melhouse was 20th (20:10). For the girls, Alison Janowski came in 17th (18:21).  Wills' time was the best SHS time at the Pomperaug course over the last two years.

October 13: The Stratford High cross country teams have had a busy few weeks. On the 28th both teams split, losing to North Haven but winning at Platt Tech. Then came a tough meet against Bunnell, Brookfield and Immaculate where Fred Wills finished 4th against the top runners in the league. The teams also raced at the Wickham Invitational before competing at home against Newtown, Law and Weston, with the boys defeating Weston and only losing to Law by five points.

September 25: The Stratford High cross country teams ran at Lauralton in Milford, CT. While the girls suffered losses to Lauralton, New Milford and New Fairfield, and the boys lost to the latter two schools, impressive perfomances occured. For the girls, Sara Levanthal had a personal best time of 19:12 to finish 12th overall, and for the boys captain Fred Wills finished 9th overall (19:34). Other top finishers for the girls included Alison Janoski, and for the boys Pat Noonan (18th), Kevin Atterbury (20th) and Matt Melhouse (21st)

September 12: The Stratford High cross country teams participated in their first meet on Wednesday, and the boys' team matched their win total from all of last season, as they lost to host Bethel and Foran but defeated Notre Dame. Senior captain Fred Wills was the team's top runner, finishing 6th in 20:04. Rounding out the top 5 was: Matt Melhouse (16th), Kevin Atterbury (23rd) , Dan Babis (25th), and Pat Noonan (29).

September 10: The Stratford High School XC season officially begins Wednesday for the boys and girls teams. The boys are led by senior Fred Wills, while the girls, still looking for members, are led by juniors Sara Levanthal and Alison Janowski. The 2001 XC page is here.
