2001-2002 Season Review.
While the new year did not bring a repeat SWC championship, both the boys and girls teams enjoyed a great deal of success under coaches Sirowich and Schmidlin. The boys team set 7 records, including 2 SWC records, and the girls set 3 records and qualified 3 girls to the State Open.
Both teams were able to showcase talent in all areas of track and field. While the depth was not always there, the ability was. In sprints, both teams set new 4x200 records and sent sprint medley relay teams to Class S. Each team qualified 3 runners in the 55m dash for states. Joe Lima ran a 39.47 300m at Yale. Sarah Mitchell qualified for the State Open in the 600m, and Colin Sheldon and Kevin Atterberry each had solid 600m runs during the season and SWCs.
The hurdles were a question mark before the season. The boys graduated two-time SWC medalist Harry Bridgeforth, and the girls had graduated a number of hurdlers. No problem. Joe Lima set a new SHS and SWC record in the 50m hurdles, and  qualified for State Open. John Trevil also was strong, medaling at SWCs and qualifying for Class S. For the girls, Shelby Cuffley qualified for both the SWCs and states.
Distance also performed well. Captain Fred Wills set a new 1000m record, and, along with senior Kevin Atterberry, sophomore Matt Melhouse, and junior Pat Noonan, broke the 4x800 record en route to a 5th place at SWCs. Melhouse also ran on the sprint medley team at states, and medaled in the 1600m. Sara Leventhal and Alison Janowski continued their excellence leading the 4x800 team, as well as contributing in individual events. Levanthal also ran on the sprint medley at states.
The shot put saw some monster performances. Captain Tim Jacques set a career best of 39'8" in shot put, finishing 3rd at SWCs for his third shot put medal in three years. He also added a relay medal. Jeannine Rudd set a school record at SWCs, becoming the first girl to break 30'. The next week, she topped 31', but Catherine Fergurson threw over 33' as both made State Open. She finished up by throwing 34'6.75" at the Open to finish 14th.
In jumps, seniors led the way. Zaria Williams finished 3rd in the long jump at SWCs and 5th at Class S, setting a new school record. For the boys, Dave Harvey excelled at the long jump (19'2"). Kevin Oakes was runner-up in the long jump at SWCs. He lost to Joe Lima, who was the SWC champion (19'3"). Lima also won the high jump (6'4.25") with a conference record, went All-State, and just missed All-New England. Sophomore Nick Ferraro showed what the future holds as he placed 5th in the high jump at SWCs.
